USM

USM is synonymous with timeless, sustainable design that evolves with our needs. Its status as an icon of modern design was solidified in 2001 when it was included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

USM was founded in 1885 as an ironmongery and metalworking company. Its name is made up of the initials of its founder, Ulrich Schärer, and the first letter of Münsingen, its birth place and where USM remains to this day.

In 1961, when Paul Schärer Jr. — the founder's grandson — commissioned Swiss architect Fritz Haller to design a new factory with a flexible, modular structure that could adapt as the company grew. The USM Haller system applied the logic of the building to the objects inside it.

Chrome-plated balls, steel tubes, colour-dipped sheet steel. Sixty years on, USM Haller still stands out for its pure design that outlasts trends and harmonises with all types of architecture.
