USM

USM was founded in 1885 as an ironmongery and metalworking company. Its name is made up of the initials of its founder, Ulrich Schärer, and the first letter of Münsingen, its birth place and where USM remains to this day.

In 1961, when Paul Schärer Jr. — the founder's grandson — commissioned Swiss architect Fritz Haller to design a new factory with a flexible, modular structure that could adapt as the company grew. The USM Haller system applied the logic of the building to the objects inside it.

Chrome-plated balls, steel tubes, colour-dipped sheet steel. Sixty years on, USM Haller still stands out for its pure design that outlasts trends and harmonises with all types of architecture.

Designer

FRITZ HALLER

Fritz Haller is perhaps the best example of an architect who has successfully transferred their architectural competence into furniture design. After qualifying as a draftsman, Haller initially gathered experience through engagements in Switzerland and the Netherlands before joining his father Bruno's architecture firm.

Early Haller works, such as the Kantonsschule, Baden from 1960 or the 1957 Weststadtschulhaus in Solothurn, beautifully demonstrate the Haller approach to design. Fritz Haller's based his work on three systems: the "mini" for private houses and offices, "midi" for taller buildings, and "max" for industrial complexes. All three systems are based on the same steel frame construction principle, just at varying scales.

In 1963, at the bequest of Ulrich Schärer Münsingen, Fritz Haller extended his mini-midi-maxi system to furniture design and, in doing so, created the now world famous system USM Haller modular furniture.
