ILMARI TAPIOVAARA

Ilmari Tapiovaara graduated in furniture design from Helsinki’s Central School of Applied Arts in 1937. He later worked in Le Corbusier’s Paris office before becoming artistic director and designer at Asko Oy, one of Finland’s leading furniture manufacturers.

From 1946 to 1947, Tapiovaara and his wife, Annikki, designed furniture for Helsinki’s Domus Academica student housing project, resulting in the iconic Domus Chair.

Influenced by Alvar Aalto, Tapiovaara believed functional design could support social equality, with architecture forming the foundation of his practice. During his career, he received numerous honours, including six gold medals at the Milan Triennale.
