Marcel Breuer was a student and later master carpenter at the Bauhaus, where he pioneered tubular-steel furniture that united art, industry and modern living.

Breuer later turned his attention to architecture, teaching at Harvard under Walter Gropius and designing significant buildings, including New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art. He was also the first architect to receive a solo exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

His furniture collection was acquired by Gavina and later became part of Knoll in 1968. Iconic designs including the Wassily Chair, Cesca Chair and Laccio Tables remain enduring modernist classics.
