Corker No.1 Marble

The silhouette of a champagne cork served Herzog & de Meuron as inspiration for the design of the Corker furniture, which can be used as a stool or side table. The extension of the popular product family with a new version made of marble emphasises the monolithic character of the design even more: the object made of coloured natural stone looks like a sculpture in the room. Jaques Herzog says: “You could almost see the Corker as a Pop Art object, because it emerged directly and without any significant reshaping by enlarging an object that exists in our everyday culture.” This furniture made of polished or matt marble is not only a visual highlight: the tactile qualities of natural stone lend the Corker No. 1 Marble a soft and pleasing touch. Five different types of marble – from light Bianco Carrara to grey Grigio Nuvolato, from green Guatemala and brown Emperador Dark to black Nero Marquina, milled from one block – are available for the new Corker No. 1 Marble.

Established in Basel in 1978, Herzog & de Meuron is a partnership led by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron together with Senior Partners Christine Binswanger, Ascan Mergenthaler, Stefan Marbach, Esther Zumsteg, and Jason Frantzen. An international team of nearly 500 collaborators including the two Founders, five Senior Partners, ten Partners, and 50 Associates work on projects across Europe, the Americas and Asia. The main office is in Basel with additional offices in London, New York, Hong Kong, Berlin and Copenhagen.

The practice has designed a wide range of projects from the small scale of a private home to the large scale of urban design. Many projects are highly recognised public facilities, such as museums, stadiums, and hospitals, and they have completed distinguished private projects including offices, laboratories and apartment buildings. Awards received include the Pritzker Architecture Prize (USA) in 2001, the RIBA Royal Gold Medal (UK), the Praemium Imperiale (Japan), both in 2007, and the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (USA) in 2014.
